More than just ‘content’

I regularly use that word now to refer to some of my work, but when I first heard writing and other media referred to that way, I hated it. It feels so lifeless, like a machine made it, and that whatever you’re reading, watching, or hearing wasn’t the result of hours of human creativity and collaboration. And this shift to “content” is also likely why so many companies are looking to generative AI to take over these tasks. Don’t get me wrong — I love GenAI and I use ChatGPT like an assistant every day, in both my work and personal life. But if you want to truly use writing, visuals, video, and audio (fine, content works as shorthand!) as part of your business strategy, then you need a more robust approach than just an LLM prompt. If you’re reading this and don’t need further convincing, then well, yeah, you have lots of options for freelance journalists, marketers, and publicists to help you achieve your business goals. I’m confident, however, that for certain kinds of organizations, I can be the ideal partner.

A journalist’s embrace of research and a focus on details

Working as a journalist for many years ingrained in me traits that I will forever bring to any job I take on. Whether I’m preparing for a founder profile, corporate report, or even a quick blog post, I absorb as much information relevant to the project in as little time as possible. It’s both part of my personality as well as a skill I’ve developed over years of reporting. I have a similar obsession with details, down to line by line fact checking and grammar.

End-to-end partnership

Sometimes you just want help turning an outline into an article, or just need a memo copy edited. And I’d be happy to do that! But when we work together, you can consider me a partner rather than just a contractor. I can make myself available to work on any level of project, from brainstorming to distribution.

Goal-driven work and promotion

I’ve often been surprised by how common it is for even the most sophisticated organizations to produce content that essentially exists only for itself — work that might contain some smart ideas yet has no through line and isn’t getting any eyeballs. When you work with me, I will ensure that I am aligned with your team’s goals and do everything I can to develop a product that is thesis-driven, tied to business goals, and seen by the right people.

A love of storytelling

As I see it, there’s never a need for sharing boring work, no matter how niche or academic a topic may be. We all learn through stories, and even data-rich, technical work can benefit from clearly communicated storytelling. And if you want your personality to come through in a piece, I’d love to help you make that happen.
